Generation Work is a unique initiative that equips young people, ages 18 to 29, with the skills and abilities that employers want and need. The initiative aims to connects participants to emotional and motivational support and prepare young people and employers with the skills to succeed within a diverse and equitible workforce.

What is Generation Work?

Generation Work, launched by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in 2016, is a national initiative aimed at connecting young adults, especially those of color from low-income families, with meaningful employment, professional development pathways, and mentorship opportunities. This initiative aims to leverage public and private systems, aligning education, employment, and support services to help young people develop the skills needed for the workforce.

The initiative’s focus areas include addressing systemic racial inequities, changing employer practices to create more supportive workplaces, partnering with employers to improve youth engagement, and sharing lessons and best practices within the workforce development field.

Program Evolution -

Phase One: Building Foundations

During its first phase, Generation Work partnered with five communities, including Philadelphia, to align education, employment, and support services. This phase focused on helping young people develop the skills necessary to thrive in the workforce.

Phase Two: Expanding Impact
In the second phase, partners will work with employers over three years to improve hiring, retention, and advancement practices, particularly for young people of color. This phase focuses on four key areas:

  1. Racial Equity: Addressing systemic inequities that contribute to employment disparities.

  2. Employer Engagement: Creating more supportive workplaces for young adults of color.

  3. Positive Youth Development: Enhancing how employers engage with and empower young workers.

  4. Learning and Evidence Building: Sharing lessons and best practices across the workforce development field.
